Growing fir trees from seed is surprisingly easy. We can show you how.

The germination rate of our hand-collected white fir seeds was very high. Without stratification, seedlings emerged after 2-3 weeks under nominal conditions. Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours and then place them into moist soil or a growing medium such as peat or perlite. Cold stratification is also useful but not required for this species.

White fir, abies concolor can grow in all sorts of environments but is known best for its native range in the western and south-western North America. These little seedlings can become trees that over 70m tall, the largest one being a 75m tree reported in Yosemite National Park, where they grow exceptionally well. However this tree is suitable to a range of environments and even grows well here in the greenbelt of southern Ontario. The trunk can reach 1m wide easily in a mature specimen.

Overall, this tree is a positive addition to any landscape. Resistant to drought, can tolerate cold winters, and is very long lived. If you plant this tree in a suitable environment, it will be enjoyed for generations. Recommended for beginners to growing trees and nature enthusiasts alike.
