Meet a Very Dazed Wax Eye Bird

in #nature7 years ago

Yesterday this tiny little fella flew straight into the corner of the kitchen window. He lost a few feathers and ended up huddled up under the table outside. I heard the thud but Dan saw the little guy get wiped out so he went outside to protect it from the dogs while he recovered. We didn't think it was going to make it as it was quite dazed and confused, but it did! This type of bird is known as a Wax-Eye or Silvereye, and this is a baby, although they don't grow very large as adults. Look at how beautiful it is!

Wax eyes were first recorded in 1832 in New Zealand which is where we will be living until March/April next year! Dan has a whole stack of weddings to shoot and I've been super busy working online too - I'm going to try make more of an effort with Steemit though!

We are surrounded by wildlife here, we are staying on an avocado orchard and have about 4acres as well as a massive gully to the side of the property. 🌱 The chickens have 9 little babies too, maybe that can be my next post. 🐥

Wax eyes are widely distributed across NZ- mostly in the forest but are also very common in suburbia too. These birds are a little smaller than the common sparrow and are olive-green and have a ring of white around their eyes.

The diet of a wax eye is insects, fruit and nectar. Wax eyes are considered a native species as there is no record of their arrival to NZ but their Maori name is Tauhou which means 'stranger' or 'new arrival' so I guess the natives must know something we don't. Hope his headache wasn't too bad!
