What is a wombat?

A wombat is like an underground Kowalah.

As with most all marsupials, they are native to Australia. Although many Australians have never seen a wombat because they spend nearly all their time underground. Nevertheless when they are above ground they forage for food which consists of grasses, roots, herbs, and bark. To chew these tough foods they have 24 rootless teeth that are consistently growing due to natural wear and tear.

Interestingly enough it takes them around 14 days to digest a single meal. This seems to be consistent with their time being spent primarily underground. As these cute creatures are above ground looking for food they must be on the lookout for their natural predators; foxes and dingos. Their defence from these creatures is quite incredible!

They have a butt that has a thick level of cartilage that gives them a hard butt. When being chased back into their burrow they lure the predator slightly into their burrow. Once their head is in the burrow the wombat uses it’s butt to crush the predator's skull between the roof of their burrow and their hardened wombat butt.

Many things make the wombat stand out from their fellow marsupials(animals with pouches). One distinctive fact is that their pouch is flipped in the opposite direction to most other marsupials. meaning that the opening is at the rear end of the body. Check it out!
