Did you know?
Who introduced the caffeinated drink that the country enjoys on a relaxing evening? Well, the credit goes to Baba Budan, a Muslim saint of Southern Indian origin. Though the time if first traces of coffee in India is not recorded, it is said that the saint happened to smuggle a total of seven coffee beans by hiding them in his long beard.
Why did he had to smuggle? Arab had a strict ban on export of coffee beans so that it didn't germinate. It was an illegal act to smuggle raw green beans of coffee. It either had to be roasted or baked before it left the country. So was Baba Budan punished for his act? No, the reason for him not being punished was the number of coffee beans he smuggled. Number seven is considered sacrosanct number in Islam and that made the saints act of smuggling the seeds a religious one.
Baba Budan brought the seeds to his native Mysore in southern India and started cultivated coffee plants from the seven seeds he has brought. Soon there were coffee estates and today India is known as the country with the tastiest coffee beans.
