Green vegetable bug (or Stink Bug)
The bug below is known as Nezara viridula . It originates from Ethiopia but has now spread throughout much of the world. Of course it has many different common names but here in Australia it is simply called the Green vegetable bug. As kids we called all such bugs Stink bugs as when disturbed, they release a strong smell from their scent glads (see third image). It's a good one for gardeners to learn to recognise as they are considered an agricultural pest. They cause damage to crops with their piercing mouth part known as the rostrun (see third image). They do not simply pierce the plant. They also inject a chemical which liquefies the surrounding area of the plant to enable the bug can suck it up.
The photos below were taken with a Canon 7D and Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro lens.
