Hvítserkur - sea stack, troll or animal?

in #nature7 years ago (edited)

Located in North Iceland, Hvítserkur is a 15m high sea stack that kind of looks like an animal of some sort, maybe an elephant or a rhino.

Legend has it that Hvítserkur is a troll who lived nearby and wanted to tear down the bells at the local convent. Icelandic trolls are not Christian and they don't like the sound or sight of churches or church-bells. However, the troll got caught by daylight and was turned into stone.

In reality, it was once the plug of a volcano. Over the years the craters surrounding it eroded away by the sea leaving only this behind. However, Hvítserkur itself would have given way to the ocean as well, but it had its foundations strengthened with concrete some years ago.
