THE DEEPEST CAVE ON EARTH

in #nature7 years ago

Nature creates incredible landscapes as far as the eye can see but deep underground are cave systems that go on for miles leading to untouched wonders of the earth that are just as remarkable as the land above. This is the Krubera cave, the deepest known cave on earth.

It's incredible to even think these unknown cave systems exist right beneath our feet without anyone even thinking about them but when we humans go exploring, we don't give up easy. The depth we have reached in this cave is an incredible 8.346 miles. Formed from an enormous shield of limestone, this cave has hundreds of other caves connected to it.

The cave was discovered by Georgian speleologists in 1960 where they reached a depth of 95m. They were unable to continue due to tight cave passages. The exploration continued in 1968 where they managed to get bellow over double the previous depth to 210m. It wasn’t until 1999 when they realized the cave was the deepest in the world! In 2001 Ukranian explorers went to the record breaking depth of 1710m but the deepest depth recorded was in 2012 by a man named Gennadiy Samokhin where he reached the current world record of 2197m!
