Fish monitoring from the beach
Today it was the first time in a long period that I went to the office. The reason for that, was going to help in the regular monitoring of fish from the beach that we started this year. First because we were interested in it and thought it to be an interesting (lunch) break activity. Now with working at home, it is a good reason to see colleagues.
Today we did a number of hauls with a small net at a depth of about 1 meter. Our main intrest is juvenile flatfish but today we mainly caught sand eel (Ammodytes tobianus). Which was a surprise as sand eel was hardly caught in the earlier weeks. Next to the sand eel, we caught a large number of sand gobies, a nest‐holding fish with paternal care.
Luckily we did catch some fish.
After catching them, we identify them, count and measure them. So that this can give us some information on the presence and development of the fish in the shallow zone.
Just to give you an impression of today:
