BIG CATS [Season One Episode Two]

Welcome to another interesting episode of our tour with the BIG CATS. On this episode, we will be talking about the nocturnal species in the wild. We all know about how the domestic cats have a unique night vision ability, but have you thought about it for a second if this ability is also seen among the cats in the wild? In few minutes time, you will be able to find that out, as you read through this article.

The eyes of the Wild Cats differs greatly from most other animals in the wild and one of these differences is seen with the presence of tapetum lucidum which is found behind the retina. It serves as the amplifier of it's night vision ability, this night vision comes up when the sun sets.

When it is night or when these animals are in the dark, all they require is a little bit of light, probably the rays from the moon light or the stars to activate their night vision mode. When the light shines on the eyes of these animals, a colour appears on the eye. These colour varies to different animals, to some animals, the color appear to be blue, while others are green, white, red depending on the specie of the animal and the angle on which the light hits on the eye.

Most of these animals have the ability to regulate the lights rays that enters into it's eyes and when the light appears brighter than it can control, it's pupil will shrink to reduce the entry of the light's ray.

Having the ability to be active and see when it is night, it makes some of these animals to hunt during the night too as they can be seen to have good rest and also groom while it is day then at night they hunt and this makes then to hunt nocturnal animals too "funny isn't it ?". They hunt on Large hoofed mammals, such as wild boar, deer, water buffalo.

The night hunting activity of these animals increases their tendency to stay away from people when they are close to human habitation, by so doing, they are able to avoid poachers.

Since the animals can see in the dark, they carry out their patrolling activity when it is night, having an added advantage to sight ability.

The uniqueness character of these animal when talked about will keep you awake all night but bit by bit, we shall be able to know more and more interesting facts about the Big Cats.
