A new species of whale has been discovered!
Before you ask, it's not on Steemit.
Scientists have announced that a mysterious whale that washed up ashore on an Alaskan beach in 2014 is indeed a species hitherto unknown to modern science. Originally thought to be a juvenile Baird's beaked whale, DNA testing and other examination has proved that this is an entirely new species. It's not entirely unknown however - Japanese fishermen have long referred to this smaller, darker version of the beaked whale by the name karasu, or 'raven', but until recently, it was assumed this was just folklore.
It's amazing to think that we are still discovering new species of life on our planet in this day and age - particularly one that's over twenty feet long!
No word yet on whether the Steemwhale will be included in this update to the whale family tree.
