Celestial Challenge- Thursday Forces in Nature: Providence Canyon
Today is Thursday, and for @sirknight #celestialchallenge that means we are enjoying forces in nature. I thought I would go a bit off the beaten path here & instead of showing you lightening & dark rain laden clouds, I would show you instead the result of said forces.
These lovely canyon pictures you see are from Providence Canyon (AKA "little grand canyon".) It is located in rural Georgia and is in large due to erosion. The sediment lends itself well to erosive forces since it is full of soft Georgia clay. You can find interesting chunks of white clay in the bottom of the canyon. The canyon bed from rim is measured at 150' depth in some sections. There's also an underground river in the canyon bed which causes the bed to become very muddy when large groups of people tread on it.
The park has made efforts to curtail erosion by putting up some fencing to keep people from the edges. It is forbidden to take the white clay though local gas stations and convenience stores sell it. Those with pica love to eat the clay. Pica, for those who don't know, is when people crave non nutritive foods. This happens often in pregnant women who want to chew ice cubes & all in all, is probably due to a mineral deficiency in the body.
The park is really cool. I did the half marathon they have hold there back in 2015. That was when most of the pics were taken. This canyon was also only about an hour from where I used to live. The race takes the runners through some sections of challenging trail along the outer canyon rim and then down into some more flat areas in the valley.
I hope you've enjoyed learning about this canyon. It was a favorite place for me for many years and now I don't live there anymore. I hope the park is still working on curtailing erosion and controlling people attempting to get to close to threw rim. It is in a very rural section of Georgia so that helps keep some destructive people out. =) Some people just don't have respect for nature, unfortunately.

Amazing photography Upvote and followed
You may call me greedy but I see those photos as a good place to mine for gems. :P
Oh are you a rock hound? I love rocks, crystals, minerals!
I’m really glad you went with these instead of clouds and lightening. Much more interesting! The power nature has when given some time to work its magic. Those are some amazing shots!
Thanks! I think this will be how I continue to interpret forces in nature ;)
That is a cool looking place. How did you do on your half marathon?
It was challenging. One had to go around the loop twice. The initial hills wiped me especially on the second go around. It certainly was no where close to a personal record but it was a lot of fun
It looks like a great "backdrop" for doing just about anything.
Indeed :)
Awesome pics, Chelsea 😊!
Thanks so much! =)
Something worth seeing. Like that white clay.
I think it definitely is. I miss going there
Wow - amazing landscape. Who would've thought you could find something so spectacular in Georgia?! I've never been there, but now I want to visit this place! Thanks for sharing.
I have found there are gems in every state I've lived in =)
This is true. No one comes back from vacation saying: "I had a good time, but the scenery could have been better!"
Beautiful shots, Must be pretty impressive in real time
Definitely is & thank you
Very cool! The South has many hidden treasures. I don't mind that they are a bit hidden. :)
