Pandemic Explained Part Three - Secondary Threats

in #nature7 years ago

Intro

A secondary threat results form a primary cause, for instance if there is a flood many people will die from lack of clean water if the water systems are compromised. Often a primary disaster will not be the main cause of death, it will be all the secondary threats created. Poor sanitation, lack of power, lack of food and civil unrest are all examples of secondary threats.

One of the most overlooked affects of pandemics is secondary causes of death, in this article I will be talking about the lesser known.

Most Likely Secondary Threats

Fire

Fire

Many appliances will be left on when people succumb to disease, these type of fires will be more common in suburban environments. Within urban environments fires caused by air conditioners will be more common, especially within high rises.

With first responders often suffering the most and over stretched many fires will get out of control. Smoke is the biggest killer. Linked to this are deaths caused by injuries, violence as well as any others that need emergency assistance.

Waste

Garbage left in the open and waste treatment centres closed will have a combined effect of increasing disease spread. This will cause a lot of new illnesses to spread, for example dysentery which is a result of poor waste disposal.

One interesting consequence of waste treatment failure is 'back flow' where waste comes back to its entry point (toilets).

Clothes Supplies

Clothing is a low priority for production, although the government will attempt to keep power stations and other critical infrastructure working... Any non vital sector will be largely ignored, clothes is one such area.

Most of us buy new clothes every season, throwing away the old as well as buying cheap, low quality pieces. In a long term scenario clothes shortages will become deadly, especially in cold environments. Obviously the worse a pandemic, the less clothes will be made and thus a bigger shortage.

Conclusion

Remember it is not the always the obvious shortages that are deadly, think outside the box where ever possible.

Hurricane Katrina was a prime example of this. Most of the deaths and illnesses occurred after the flood. Great info. Resteeming this for our followers
