Uses Of Stone In Civil Engineering Works

Following are the uses of stone in civil engineering works:

1.Building construction: Stones are used as structural unit for the construction of foundations, walls, column, lintels, arches, damp-proof courses etc

2.Flooring and roofing: Stones are used extensively for flooring in the form of thin slabs, and also for roofing either alone or in combinations with steel or timber girders. Slate in the form of tiles is used as an excellent roof covering material.

3.Heavy constructions: Stones are used as blocks in the construction of bridges piers, abutments, retaining walls, harbours,light house, chimney and dams.

4.Paving:Stones are used as paving for pavements, walk ways, foot paths, open areas etc.

5.Railway:The stones are used as ballast for railway lines.

6.Architectural work:Stones are used for ornamental works in the building in the form of moldings with large projections. Stones slabs are used for face work(Stone cladding) of buildings for architectural treatment. The stone are used facing work to give massive appearence.

7.Concrete ingredient: Stone ballast, commonly known as coarse aggregate is used for the manufacture of cement concrete, artificial stone, hollow blocks etc.

8.Blast furnace flux: Stones are also used as blast furnace flux.

9.Road Construction: Stone units and stone ballast are used as base material for road construction.

10.Stone dust: Stone may also be used as stone dust, in place of sand in locations where sand is not available.

11.Manufacture of like and cement : Lime stone is used extensively for the manufacture of lime and cement.
