We use many natural home remedies, which would make my entry too long so I will enter the two I use the most.

  1. Coconut Oil
    We use coconut oil for several things in our home from cooking to infusing with medicinal oils we encapsulate. However the thing I rave about the most, to anyone who listens is using it for an all body skin moisturizer!
    I have very fair skin and from my earliest recollections I have gotten a sunburn every summer, at least once. Six years ago that all changed when I read about the benefits if coconut oil as an after sun moisturizer to sooth redness to sunburns, will prolong your tan, prevent peeling and if used before going out into the sun would prevent burning! I thought 'yeah right I would fry like a chicken in 5 minutes if I put an oil on', which is what happened to me once when a friend sprayed me with baby oil and water once.
    I was looking for a natural way to moisturize and didn't want to use anything on my skin that I wouldn't eat so I started using an organic, cold-pressed coconut oil as a daily moisturizer and I am very happy to say that I haven't had a sunburn since and I get a very nice tan every summer now!

  2. Lemon & Rosemary Oils in my Shampoo
    (blond to light brown for lemon, not for med.brown to black)
    2 years ago I lost most of my hair so the first thing I did was consult my "Prescription for Nutritional Healing 5th Edition" book to figure out what to do. I rinsed my head and remaining hair in distilled water & apple-cider vinegar (Bragg) https://www.bragg.com/products/bragg-organic-apple-cider-vinegar.html then rubbed my scalp in coconut oil, waited 2 hours and rinsed again. I did this 3 times in one week to kill any fungus that may have been the cause plus this conditions and nourishes the follicles. I went to the doctor to rule out a known medical condition and started to take vitamin E and biotin right away. The book also recommended many herbs and oils to stimulate hair follicles and promote growth. The ones I came across the most were lemon and rosemary so I added several drops of each to my shampoo, I squeezed 5 capsules of vitamin E into the bottle and used this for a year and a half. I also found an excellent natural product called Bio-Regrow https://absorbscience.com/bio-regrow/ and used it up until recently.

Today my hair is almost back to the long length I prefer, healthy and shinny! I still use lemon & rosemary oil in my shampoo and I intend to do so forever. I also read that putting lemon oil in your shampoo slows the greying process, Bonus!

Wow on that hair! When I went through a particularly stressful time, I lost literally 1/3-1/2 of my hair - it was falling out in clumps. Although I have recovered from that time, I never have regained the full thickness I had (not necessarily a bad thing as my hair was almost too thick anyway.)

I love coconut oil and use it for lots of things - including infusing herbs into (I use a blend of coconut and olive to keep it the right consistency for me - more coconut oil in the warm summer, and more olive oil in the winter.)

I know what you went through! My hair fell out in clumps do to stress as well, what did you do to get yours to grow back?
I like using olive oil for a lot of things too. I've used it on rashes and bug bites like sand bugs. I was too afraid I'd burn to a crisp if I used it on my skin in the sun, never thought of it for my hair. I do use coconut oil on the tips of my hair so I will try a blend with olive oil. My cats are going to want to eat my hair soon! Hahaha!

My stress was an acute, almost bereavement-level trauma. I didn't do anything special to get it to grow back, just did my best to take care of myself in general. Still, I don't have the thickness I once had. (Almost didn't notice that except that my daughter's hair is now the thickness mine used to be.)

I blend my coconut and olive oil and infuse my herbs into it. I use plantain weed or dock weed on bug bites and rashes - it even worked on a child's spider bite (she would have been taken to the doctor that night by her mother, but I asked if I could try this... and it worked a miracle.) That's my main one, I guess. Plantain and dock work by pulling out the poison - plantain was even used by some of the tribes for snakebite! So, that's my go-to right now - plentiful, cheap and just works on everything.

That is very interesting! We had both of those growing in back of our house when I was growing up. I will put that in my recipe book. I am happy for you that you grew your hair back, even if it is not as thick. I hope your stress is better too!

Thanks! I agree they are big aspects of overall health. We take vitamins, minerals, natural supplements and drink distilled water. Making most of our meals from scratch and choosing organic when we can get it is part of our over all healthy living style. We have so much to learn about natural remedies and medicines and I'm so glad to find this group!

Thanks! It is the only vinegar I use for consumption, I have been buying and making brine for anything I pickle now and ACV for flavor. I am a fan of fermenting now too!

Excellent post!

Another oil that is great for regrowing hair, and scalp health, is cold pressed castor oil.

From what I've read, unusual hair loss is often caused by clogged hair follicles, and by rubbing in castor oil, leaving it on for an hour or two, then washing it out of your hair, as you did with the coconut oil, it clears the hair follicles and stimulates new growth.

Castor oil is also reputed to gradually return greying hair to its natural color.

There are those that take it further, and I've read several times of making a pack with 1 Tbsp castor oil, 1 Tbsp raw honey and 1 raw egg yolks, mix well, then rub thoroughly into your scalp, and/or it also makes a great face pack.

Leave on for about an hour, preferably under a shower cap, and it is supposed to be amazing for your hair and skin. I have yet to try it, but I have everything on hand, so one of these days soon. ;-)

I'm with you in using coconut oil as an all over moisturizer. It's wonderful stuff. I typically add several essential oils, such as rosemary, lemon, lavender and cedarwood, which acts as a repellent for our many ticks and other biting insects.

Thanks! I have not used castor oil for many years, my mom and grandma used it once a month for both a hair treatment and a face pack with egg whites. Then an aunt made me eat it every day for 2 weeks when I went camping with them and now I can not stomach the smell. This is great info for my recipe book though, thanks for the tips! The bug repellent factor I forgot to include in my post, I used to get a lot of mosquito bites and they would welt up and last for weeks. Now if I get a handful all year they are small and do not itch at all! I did use lemon once and got sick to my stomach so I did some research and found out that it is not good to use topically before going out in the sun, so please be careful.

The lemon I'm using is essential oil, and only in a tiny amount, and truthfully, I actually use lemongrass more often than lemon. I've never had any issues with using either topically.

The only natural product I've found that made me sun sensitive is black cohosh, which is frequently touted as a natural remedy for anxiety and depression, but rarely if ever do they mention that it greatly increases sun sensitivity.

I used to live in Florida, and we frequently raced our sailboat, which was a highlight of my life. And I'm the type that rarely sunburns with or without any kind of protectant.

Long story short, we spent the afternoon racing, it wasn't even a particularly hot and sunny day, I used a 30 SPF sunscreen I'd used for years without issues, and basically burnt to a crisp. One of the worst sunburns of my life.

And the only thing different was that I'd been taking black cohosh capsules for about a week.

Never again. It's clearly not my friend.

So when you come out with your recipe book, you may want to at least mention that black cohosh is contraindicated for those who frequently spend time in the sun.

As for castor oil, the type I buy has little scent, so it's not a real factor.
