The mystery of magic circles in Namibia

Have you heard about the mysterious circles around the sandy desert terrain in Namibia? Called "fairy circles", they are formed and disappear over time. Yet no one can definitively determine the reasons.

According to the American biologist Walter Schinkel they mark underground nests of termites. But he failed to find any concrete evidence to support such a theory.

Other assumptions, such as differences in nutrient soil or dying plants because of toxic fumes earth also not been confirmed. Little was known about how persist

By comparing satellite images from 2004 and 2008 Schinkel found that they are quite stable, having appeared in nearly full size or if they are very small, are growing rapidly.

With satellite images biologist track and the time in which circles appear mature, and then again from the wilderness growing vegetation. Most seem to exist from 30 to 60 years.

Schinkel also found that the circles form only on sandy terrain with a minimum number of stones.
