Today , i want to share about Thein Daw Gyi Pagoda which is situated in highest level of myeik. As much as I can say, It is the most popular and biggest Pagoda in Myeik which is also my native town.

့ံHistory of Thein Daw Gyi Pagoda

While king Byansakkapate was ruling in Aungtharwara city, he had five queens. Among them, the youngest was the prettiest because she was the daughter of the King of Ogre who ruled the “Purayetkha nation”.The Queen Ogress took out all the eyes of four Queens by her Ogress’ power. She sent them to her nation. Moreover, she captured and ate up all newly-born babies of all the rest of Queens. Among the blind Queens , one day the youngest one had a pregnant. In the sixth month of her pregnancy she thought she would better leave for somewhere there was no danger. Therefore , she presented her plan to the King and left the country pretending as a poor woman to be able to give birth her child safely.

After giving birth her child harmlessly, she returned to the palace with her six-month-old child. The King spoke that he would be the ruler of the the country later and gave him two names as Parama Yarzar and Mahar Dhamma Yarzar. As the Ogress was not be able to eat the glorious son, she considered that her relatives would better eat him. Intending like that , as she could not get back her nation for long , she asked the King to give her a permission for going back to her parents’ nation for a period of days . Since the King adored her a lot, he let only his son. The Prince, inform her parents what she wanted to say. With the thought of achieving her intension, the delightful Queen Ogress gave the Prince an order to inform her parents that she was in good health , and to present her loyal note to them. In that way, the Prince was sent to Purayetkha, the Nation of Ogre.

The Prince Parama Yarzar departed for Purayetkha with the royal note of his stepmother. As the journey was long and rough , both his horse and he grew weary. When reaching the top of a hill, he therefore got some sleep to feel rested , tying up the horse. At that time , the Mahatma from Mount Pyin named as Pahtaw Mountain now came along . He found out the note wearing on the Prince’s neck, in which there was a message: “Eat the one carrying this note “.Therefore, he rewrote the information to give back the boxes of Queens’ eyes and ogre tusks. The Prince continued his journey to the Ogre Nation. When he arrived there, he presented the order of his stepmother to the King Ogre. The King let the Prince stay pleasurably and then he give him the boxes back according to the note.

On the way back to his country, the Prince took a rest and got some sleep at the same place he did before. The Mahatma came around him again. Waking up the Prince , he exposed the cunningly deliberate ploy of his stepmother. Queen Ogress. Then , he gave him a magic ball of mercury compound which was used to be sighted back. When Prince Parama Yarzar arrived back in his country, he addressed to the King that his wicked stepmother was not a human being, but just an ogress who made the rest Queens blind with her power and ate up all newly-born babies. Then he was also sent to the Ogre Nation with an evil note according to her wicked device. Since the King had a terrible temper to Queen Ogress , she was given a royal decree to excute. The Prince also made all the Queens regained eyesight with the power of the magic mercury compound ball given by the Mahatma.

In Myanmar Era 630, the only daughter of the last king of kyamai dynasty was seized by Akadea Yarzar, one of the sons of King Linzin. Afterwards, King Akadea Yarzar governed Aungtharwara and built Tanintharyi. The fifty-three dynasties starting from King Akadea Yarzar ruled in Tanintharyi for 254 years. In the reign of the last King Kyaukbwar Myasawsan and during 893 ( AD 1531 ) , Tanintharyi was seized by the Prince Byarama Thong Teiktha, the son of the King Sintathanshin with his mighty army. The Tanintharyi harbor had been located in Sintoat town ( now called Tawnauklel village ) in 639. As it became shoal , a new port city named as Marit ( Myeik ) was set up by King Byarama Thong Teiktha at the foot of Khel hill 895. ( AD 1533 ).

In 1093, Ayanmani , the Mayor of Marit and elderly people of the town built a great stupa which was height rise to 32 cubits and plinth of 18 cubits over the thredd relies of Buddha under the patronage of Ven Jagara. With reference to being built on the top of Khel hill, it is called “ Khel Taung Stupa “. In 1121, the founder of the Third Myanmar Empire, Alaungmintayargyi U Aung Zaya marched to Tanintharyi and defeated all the regions. In 1123, U Dein Kyaw , the Mayor of Tanintharyi had rebuilt Marit which was under the control of Tanintharyi governor over one o’clock at noon on the 7th day of waning. Thadingyut. According to the wish of Alaungmintayargyi U Aung Zaya, Marit was renamed as Myeik ( Mergui ). In 1130, the order to rebuild Myeik was given in the reign of innwa King Sinphyushin. In accordance with the eight features of a good city. Mayor Kaymar Yarzar rebuilt it.

The unfinished Khel Taung Pagoda during the period of U Dein Kyaw was placed the ornamental finial and completed by Mayor Kaymar Yarzar and the local people. In 1134, Ven Zargara, a learned Mahathera , was invited respectfully to Innwa in Mayor U Oatamayarzar’s period. King Sinphyushin also conferred “Gunasaradaja Maharajaguru” degree on him. Sayadaw asked the King for a Buddhist ordination hall at Theindawgyi near Khel Taung Stupa ( Laygyunsimi Pagoda now ). At the time of Mayor Khawdawgyi , missionary Sayardaw Pannasaradaja Maharajaguru from Dawei ( Tavoy ), Ven Kodanna , Ven Puppaphala , Ven Revata , Ven Sobhita and over one hundred monks consecrated ground for Theindawgyi on Monday, the fullmoon day of Nataw. 1140 , at 3:00 pm. Being a pagoda near the ordination hall , it is called Theindawgyi Pagoda – “ Samisupacara “ in Pali. At the time of Mayor Bala Kyawhtin , the old Khel Taung Stupa was renovated and now named as “ Laygyunsimi Pagoda “ again on Monday , the fourth waning day of Tasaungmone , 1147, over one o’clock.

In 1181, U Myat Lay was appointed as the last Mayor of Myeik. Five years later, according to the treaty of Yandabo , Rakhine and Tanintharyi ( Arakan and Tenasserim ) were annexed by the British. In 1264, Deputy Commissioner Derose’s Time, each of the plinth of the Stupa was enlarged two cubits. In 1282, at the time of Deputy Commissioner Steven , the city leaders replaced the old ornamental finial ( Golden Umbrella ) by a new one which had a specially decorated pennant-shaped vane and a diamond orb. On the 2nd day of the waning of Tagu, 1282, under the leadership of the city leaders , Circle headman U Shwe Nay , U Boe Jade, U Boe Chan, U Boe Khaing and U Boe Nyunt, the Stupa was gilded with gold leaves in terms of public donations. Then , the pennant-shaped vane and the diamond orb were cleaned and hoisted atop the pagoda prosperously.

It is a tourist attraction in Myeik and you can be seen the view of sunset and that place is very peaceful and holy. So all coming tourist should visit to this place. Besides, there is very beautiful sense to take photo or selfie beautifully from the platform of pagoda. From this place, you can see along strand road ,night market where you can enjoy excellent local food and the drinks , Shwethalyaung reclining Buddha image on Pahtaw Pahtet Island opposite the port.

Along The platform , you can pray as u wish and i can say it will be fulfill as ur mind what u wish.

I also pray at Saturday and donate flowers and candles to buddha. When you reach My town Myeik ,You can stay at my home and i will get you this pagoda by my motorcycle all over the Myeik.
