Hello fellow musicians.

I thought I would just ask what all of you were up to? How do you go about songwriting? What do you do to promote your work? What information sources do you guys use?

I'll start off .. ( I have no affiliation with any of these, I have just been following them for a while and gotten a lot of useful info.)

I love this one .. these guys just sit around with engineers of all genres and talk about how they mix different records.
The into the lair series is really cool to watch he just goes through and shows you how to mix and use different plugins.

Recording Revolution is geared more to home studios but has an insane amount of stuff that it teaches.

As far as promotion, I have just decided to make goofy silly videos to go along with goofy silly songs. I program my drums to be very basic, but then use a guy on fiverr to finish them. All I need to write is a kick and snare which I can edit enough to get by. I actually use a small mpc to start off with because taping drums is a lot more intuitive than a mouse click for me.

I occasionally mess with recording. I usually spend way too much time trying to get my audio interface and DAW figured out and not getting too much done. Some day I need to get a better handle on this stuff. Maybe this Steemit forum will help and make us some money too.

I've played guitar for many years, and only recently started trying to get some proficiency with bass. I recently bought a 6 string bass that is a lot of fun, and really interesting to compose with too. I guess the range and sustain helps me simplify ideas. The following track is not completed and I haven't messed with it in a while, but plan to. It needs a B section. I sort of had a movie or TV theme in mind when I composed it, and like I said mostly written on my bass.

As far as the daw side goes I have a pc Dedicated ti running the DAW. It cuts diwn on problems, but I do still have them. I try to keep things as ready to go as I can. There are tons of youtube videos on all the daws. Just go look for a beginner guide. Good luck man.

I write most of my songs directly onto the DAW. Whenever I have an idea or a melody (it's usually short, just 4 bars), I write it into the DAW and extend from that instead of laying out the track's entire arrangement. I need to change that.

I noticed lots of good tracks have good compositions and arrangement. I'm also more fluent with melodies rather than drums, so most of the time, my drums are just basic ones, which I think needs to be changed.
Oh, also! When ever I have a melody in mind, I find a BPM tapper (whether it's online on desktop or an app on my phone), and try to tap out the BPM of that melody. It's a start for most of my drafts.

Just gotta find what works best for you. I like to start at 7am. Which could help explain why i am not in a band, who wants to wake up deink coffee and start writing? As far as the bars go i lime to just do 4 bar parts even though i count in threes. But if all you have is 4 bars just save it in a folder with the tempo listed. If nothing else you can come back to or just try and fit in with another tune your stuck on. Just list tempo and key ... it will help.

well I'm Laconic Flow and I'm a rapper. I lay down my own vocals with a good mike in a quiet space. I built myself a booth in the place I used to live, but there isn't the space to do the same thing in my new place. I find promotion the hardest part of the music game. There's tons of other people putting their shit out right alongside me. I have all my stuff on SoundCloud because I think people go their looking for indi artists. Sometimes I write my lyrics
and then revise them over a few days until I couldn't be more satisfied, sometimes I just go in the booth and write to the beat and record as I go until I'm done. http://soundcloud.com/laconicflow

Right on, what type of mic do you use? Did you build your own panels? I was looking at some acoustic foam on ebay for recording guitars.

Good point about lyric writing. I tend to write lyrics apart from the music. The only problem with is you have to learn to compromise with yourself. I'll write what i think is an awesome line and then when i got to record it i can't fit it in ... just gotta re-write it and make it fit somethings.
