Why I Love BTS and you should Too!!!

I love K - POP but BTS is my absolute favorite. Here’s why:

  • Not to put the other groups down or anything, I love them all, but BTS always has that air of sincerity and genuineness.

  • BTS has always stated that they are musicians before anything else and their music comes before everything. Despite being international idols they are humble and modest. They don’t let fame and ego get to their heads.

  • BTS is the first group that wasn’t a part of the big three (YG, SM, and JYP) to win a daesang at the MAMA Award. Their company is BigHit, which is really small compared to companies like YG which has BIGBANG, CL, G-Dragon, PSY – all super big $$$$making idols in Kpop. BTS won Artist of the Year at MAMA and also won another daesang, Album of the Year, at MMAs. That’s two daesangs in just the span of one month or so. It’s a really, really big deal for BTS, a group that debuted just 3 years ago, to win daesangs like that. Especially since they are not from the big three, which means they have had to rely on their own work and the work of dedicated staff to get to that level of success.
Of course all Kpop groups are hardworking, no doubt – but the effort, dedication, and love put into by BTS is beyond outstanding. They stated that in their early debut days they struggled with affording meals and generally had hard time getting by because their company is so small and not as wealthy as the big three companies. And still, they didn’t give up and focused on making music that they wanted to put out and worked really hard. Members like Jimin practice dancing hours, well into midnight just to get choreography right.

  • They have interesting and artistic concepts. Anyone who listens to BTS knows that they probably have the most confusing yet fascinating concepts and ideas. Their videos are stories and their concepts correlate to each other, telling the story of youth and how it changes and matures as BTS themselves grow from young teens to now young men. They are really dedicated to their vision and are really artful, which I appreciate and love a lot. They went from adolescent and impulsive “boys in luv” in their debut to troubled and wistfully-fading youth in HYYH to now the matured but tempted and flawed adulthood in WINGS. It’s a great demonstration of how BTS matured and a great way to tell a story. It’s also a really smart way to keep fans interested and anticipating.

  • They always talk about how much love and gratitude they have for their fans, ARMYs. Even at their acceptance speech for winning Artist of the Year at MAMA the first thing that Rap Monster said was “ARMY,” even with all the emotions and shock going through him. These guys really appreciate their fans from the bottom of their hearts and don’t take them for granted.

  • They write a lot of their own music and are truly multitalented. Members like Namjoon (Rap Monster) and Yoongi (Suga) write a lot of their own raps and produces a vast number of songs for BTS (for example, Suga wrote/produced Tomorrow, Just One Day, Boys with Fun, Let me Know, so on). They really do put a lot of their own emotions and thoughts to share with the world. Most groups these days just sing what is given to them, but not BTS!! Additionally, Suga has released his own mixtape, with many years in the making, Agust D. If you listen to his mixtape you can see it obviously has very dark and depressing themes like depression and failure.

  • They have faced so many hardships in their lives that someone like us can't even imagine of. They have worked so hard to reach the great heights and they deserve it all. They deserve the whole world's appreciation.

  • To my next point – they sing about a lot of things that aren’t typical in Kpop songs. When questioned what Bangtan Sonyeondan (Abbreviated as BTS, means ‘Bulletproof Boy Scouts’) means, J-Hope replied, “The meaning of ‘bangtan’ is to guard against something. So [our name] means that we will boldly defend our music and our value/worth.” (BTS Shares What Their Group Name Could Have Been Prior to Debut | Soompi) Some lyrics to show what I mean:

From their song Am I Wrong:

Am I wrong BTS.jpg

“The world’s goin’ crazy. And you? How bout ya? You think it is okay? I really don’t think it is. Even with ears, there’s no listening; even with eyes, there’s no seeing. A fish lives in everyone’s hearts – Its name is SELFISH SELFISH”

From their song Baepsae:

They call me a try-hard. Our generation has had it hard. Hurry, chase ‘em; My teachers were born with it all. At my part time job, it’s “all for experience”. At school, there’s the teachers. My superiors use violence. In the media they go on about ‘the generation that’s given up.’”

From their song N.O:

“Dreams disappeared: There was no time to rest, it’s a cycle of school, home or an Internet cafe. Everyone lives the same life; students who are pressured to be number
one, live in-between dreams and reality.”

“Who is the one who made us into studying machines? They classify us to either
being number one or dropping out; they trap us in borders, the adults; there’s no choice but to consent. Even if we think simply, it’s the survival of the fittest. Who do you think is the one who makes us step n even our close friends to climb up? What?”

  • When you consider that the majority of Kpop songs today are about parties, love, having fun, generally shallow topics, these lyrics are pretty impressive. And yes, of course, BTS sings about love and having fun too, but you really don’t see other groups doing what BTS is doing. These lyrics are nothing short of extraordinary; using music as a means to convey ideas and opinions that are otherwise impossible to share is not only a fantastic way to get people to listen but to do it creatively and harmlessly is really great and admirable. Also considering the fact that they are in Korea, where things are still very rigid and generally really conservative. They really are true artists and I am so wowed by them every time.

I’m going to stop before I go on. I can already think of more reasons on the top of my head, but I don’t want this to get longer than it already is.
