We live in exciting times as Modern Artists. The Tools, Technology and Platforms we have available was unfathomed even a decade ago. Sharing and transmitting our signals from all around the World like me for example broadcasting my transmission from a small Rural Community in BC Canada.

But somewhere along the way we have over saturated the content and devalued Artists work. Since I’m a musician I am choosing to talk about music. Platforms like Soundcloud have exploited free music. It has got so bad Artists pay for plays on a Platform that is free. Youtube changed their rules to not have to pay for content unless you reach their 400 hrs of streaming per month yet they still get paid for that content.

I decided to look at 20 prolific active Artists that are sharing their content like mad on Social media and have a great share response rate too. On average these 20 Artists have 50+ songs on their Spotify Profiles. So 20 Artists x 50 songs = 1000 song catalog. These Artists are from different parts of the World and in different Genres to broaden the spectrum. Their collective total monthly play count on Spotify was 2128 plays. Spotify pays $.005 per stream so that equals a depressing $10.64 collectively on a catalog of 1000 songs. This is the reality we have created. It also costs the Artists money to get their music on Spotify. So even if you don’t factor in the gear, time and all the other costs of creating a song Artists are losing money. Digging deeper Universal Music and BMI’s music catalog represents 85% of all streaming on Spotify through their influencers and marketing efforts. So if you pay for Spotify promotion you are probably paying those Labels to get in their Playlist for a period of time then you are dropped.

This entire model doesn't work for Artists. That’s why Music crypto sites have been popping up in the last year promising Artists will get paid fairly. But crypto is very unstable and the coin value directly impacts what Artists make in this scenario too. I joined several crypto sites with zero knowledge of the crypto game in the hopes I might be treated fairly. But this too is still developing and no quick solution.

There’s lots of Indie Artist’s and I realize Music Industry feeds off us since they don’t have the sales they once had. Now they generate money from the countless Indie’s that pay to be in their system while it’s free to listen. wtf. Artists release music to the big platforms because that’s where the Fans are but do they listen or is lost in the Sea of content? The system is fixed and these are impossible financial returns for our efforts. No one can survive on that. We have to change that Artist pay model or else continue working our day jobs to survive. That’s my reality and the reality of most Artists I know. Work to pay the bills and then work overtime at our Art.

This isn’t a Hobby to me. It’s my life. I am not discouraged by this instead I am inspired to change this reality by changing the approach. Since we can’t change the rules on their sites I think it’s time we create our own interactive musical experience. We have the abilities at our fingertips.

This isn't a Go Fund me campaign either. This is existing content being represented for a fair price for everyone. You can change the value of music by supporting Artists in a new model that's sustainable for all.
