Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Where do you rank Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by the Smashing Pumpkins among 90's albums? It's got to be in the top 3 for me. I love it. The depth and breadth of the lyrical and musical themes and styles grows larger each time I listen. You'd think a double-album may be spreading themselves too thin, but on the contrary, the Pumpkins just expand the excellence. It's got metal guitars and guttural howls (Bullet with Butterfly Wings, X. Y. U., Bodies), and tender ballads (Farewell and Goodnight, Lily, We Only Come Out at Night). Sure, Billy Corgan's singing style is off-putting to some. Sure, sometimes he sounds like a strangled ferret. But if you can get past it and accept it as part of their sound and give the album a listen, you will reap great rewards.
One of my favorite albums from the 90s.
