Beatles, Bee Gees, Beach Boys – As was the case with Mozart and Bach, we'll examine the fascinating role of family and genetics in the music of three classic pop bands.

This post could also have been titled, “The Last Men Standing.” Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys each formed a band with two of their brothers. Barry and Brian were both the first born, and arguably the most musically gifted – both are the sole surviving brother. Barry also survived his considerably younger brother Andy Gibb, who was a pop star as a solo artist. Paul McCartney is the sole surviving member of the original “Silver Beatles” as John, Paul, George, & Stu called themselves in the summer of 1960 – Ringo Starr joined the Beatles two years later in August of 1962.

These were three of the most transformative bands of the rock and pop era in the 20th century. The Beatles are of course are the highest selling musical artists of all time, but the Beach Boys and Bee Gees have passed the 100 million sales mark.

Barry, Brian, and Paul have something else in common, their pops were all musicians.

Paul's Pop

In Paul's case it turns out that his grandfather Joe McCartney was also a musician who played in a brass band in the tobacco company where he worked. He also owned an acoustic double bass which he played at home for enjoyment – making him the first McCartney to play bass.

Paul father Jim McCartney was clearly a very musical soul. By the age of 17 he had already taught himself to play trumpet and piano by ear. In his early 20s Jim was leading his own band, Jim Mac's Jazz Band. Jim's brother Jack, who had taught himself to play trombone, was also in the band.

In a lovely tribute to his dad, Paul McCartney recorded the first song his father had ever written. In 1974 Paul's band Wings was in Nashville recording “Sally G / Junior's Farm.” While there he and the legendary guitarist Chet Atkins were reminiscing about their fathers, and Paul suggested they record a song by his father. The band was listed as the “Country Hams” with the great pianist Floyd Cramer joining Paul, and Chet Atkins.

Above is Paul McCartney's recording of this father's song “Walking in the Park with Eloise” – keep in mind this music was all the rage in the flapper-era of the 1920s – nearly a 100 years ago. Given that, the song is catchy and one imagines it was a good dance tune.

Paul McCartney credits his father with teaching him about harmony, something he used when singing with the Beatles. They had a piano in their living room, and Paul's father also owned a Spanish guitar. Paul's dad encouraged him to take piano lessons, but like his father, he opted to play by ear. While not a virtuoso on any instrument, Paul is comfortable playing guitar, piano, bass, drums. Although he played bass in the Beatles by necessity, his playing, especially on the Sgt. Pepper's album, is impressive. Even the great Jaco Pastorius mentioned McCartney as an influence. Paul is a remarkably melodic composer who used various instruments to get what he was after, here are a few examples of his versatility.

Brian's Pop

Paul McCartney enjoyed a wholesome supportive relationship with his father, Brian Wilson's father is legendary for being quite the opposite. Murray Wilson was himself a musician and composer, and it appears he passed on his musical aptitude. Brian has spoken of his father's musical talent. He encouraged his sons with their music, and in the early stages of their career his management helped them to get into the recording studio, get radio play, and negotiate a record deal. He also managed their music publishing.

He was, however, draconian, manipulative, domineering, and abusive. It's been widely reported that he actually hit Brian in the head with a 2 X 4 (a wooden board used in home construction) that left Brian deaf in one ear. There are many clips of Murray Wilson on YouTube demonstrating just how obnoxious he was as a producer in the recording studio with the Beach Boys. Eventually, they were forced to fire him as manager. What did he do?

This seems unbelievable, but he actually started managing another band and tried to turn them into a copycat version of the Beach Boys to compete with his sons. Here is a video clip of the band.

When the Beach Boys fired Murray they neglected to wrest control of their publishing rights from him. Without their knowledge or consent, he sold their music company well below market value. It that weren't enough, he released a solo album, covering a song written by his son Brian with his nephew Mike Love.

Barry's Pop

During the Big Band era the Bee Gees' father, Hugh Gibb, was a drummer and band leader, active on the Mecca ballroom circuit in Northern England and Scotland. As is well known, in 1958 the family emigrated to Australia from Manchester, England. The Gibb brothers career began early, and they credit their father for teaching them showmanship. Their career as children singing in three part harmony took off, to such an extent that their father quit his job to be their chauffeur/manager and at times drummer.
