Head Toward the Light

If something moves me musically, it is invariably something authentic that comes from a real place. Talent enables some musicians to move around and cover lots of bases, and that's great, but for me it only works when something comes from an artist's spirit, soul, inner essence or however one chooses to describe it.

Anybody doubt John Coltrane was sincere about "A Love Supreme"? He wrote a poem about it for his album that closes out with these words:

God breathes through us so completely...so gently we hardly feel it... yet,it is our everything.
Thank you God.
ELATION--ELEGANCE--EXALTATION--All from God.

So no rant, simply a smile and gentle thought about musicians who are humble about the source of their inspiration, and courageous enough to voice it.

This is real

"Livin' all of your days in darkness let the sun shine through"

Gil Scott-Heron Lyrics

"Lady Day And John Coltrane"

Ever feel kinda down and out, you don't know just what to do--
Livin' all of your days in darkness let the sun shine through--
Ever feel that somehow, somewhere, you've lost your way--
And if you don't get help quick you won't make it through the day--
Could you call on Lady Day,
Could you call on John Coltrane
Now ‘cause they'll
They'll wash your troubles
Your troubles your troubles
Your troubles away!

Plastic people with plastic minds are on their way to plastic homes--
No beginning there ain't no ending just on and on and on and on and on, it's
All because they're so afraid to say that they're alone--
Until our hero rides in, rides in on his saxophone.
Could you call on Lady Day,
Could you call on John Coltrane
Now ‘cause they'll,
They'll wash your troubles,
Your troubles, your troubles
Your troubles away!

Now ‘cause they'll,
They'll wash your troubles,
Your troubles, your troubles
Your troubles away!

Your troubles, your troubles
Your troubles away...

Your troubles, your troubles
Your troubles...

What a great jam.

The religious drive and concentration of Coltrane are things that are so obvious when you listen to his music. He is a mystic.

Really glad you enjoyed that song! I noticed in the YouTube comments a bunch of jazz purists were putting it down. The original is great, but this version is funkier and more melodic, and brought the song to a lot of non-jazz fans who otherwise would have never known of this song. So I say good on them for covering it.

Coltrane -- couldn't agree more, enlightened and illumined, lighting the way.

Youtube comments are generally terrible, but I always have to read them :) funky is funky and music is music and boxes are boxes. Crazy how people react to a cover played by happy people. It does no bad thing to what already exists.

On this one I'm generally the opposite, I rarely read them. The only time I'm generally tempted is when I'm curious about the backup band and the info isn't in the description.

It does no bad thing to what already exists.

So true, and sometimes covers reveal pearls that were not present in the original -- been think about a music post since last week on that very subject.

Me too, I mostly has to see who the other members of the jazz band are and end up reading all the other crap.
