Track of the Day #30: J. Cole ~ G.O.M.D.
2014 Forest Hills Drive album cover
Shoutout to @jaguarpawmu for getting me on this track.
"G.O.M.D." is a song by American rapper J. Cole, from his third studio album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive. The song, an acronym for the statement "Get Off My Dick", interpolates "Get Low" by Lil Jon and samples "Berta, Berta" by Branford Marsalis, and was produced by Cole.
[...] It was planned for the song to be released as the lead single from the album in December 2014, but it was replaced by "Apparently". A music video for the song directed by Lawrence Lamont was still released in March 2015 and is a period piece that features Cole as a house slave to a white-owned plantation.
The album was released December 9, 2014.
Genius offers some deep insight on the lyrics and it's meaning, as well as this well-describing summary:
Cole is starting to lose himself in Hollywood; becoming arrogant and making typical commercial music.
His first doubts about his new lifestyle come in the second verse—he starts to realize he should focus more on true happiness and genuine love.
This begins his transition to the Cole we know now; he’s trying to get in touch with his roots and find himself throughout the rest of the project.
The official video was released on YouTube March 23, 2015:
