“March March” (2020)
This fine new song by The Chicks starts as a chant. A 21st-century chant, which is not so much a call to arms as an anthem calling for truth and justice. And, one might add, a very appropriate anthem for these times.
Fight the Good Fight
The band reminds each one of us to “march to my own drum” – like the young activists Greta Thunberg, Malala Yousafzai, and Emma Gonzalez. Each of those brave young ladies comprises a bold and fearless “army of one,” campaigning to make a better world for all – their families, their friends, their compatriots, and all their fellow human beings.
The Chicks are quick to clarify any ambiguity re that call, and to point out that being an “army of one” does not give anyone the right to take a gun to school and kill a few of her fellow students. Any “army” not fighting for peace is not fighting for us. (Image source)Army of Peacemakers
And note that those 3 aforementioned advocates carry on their struggle without using guns or any other instruments of war. With only their sword-pens and their voices, they are striving to lead us away from death and destruction. As for The Chicks, with their musical voices and their instruments of creative artistry, they are clearly in the same league as Malala and her ilk.
The Chicks
The Chicks are a US alt-country-pop trio comprising Natalie Maine, Martie Erwin Maguire, and Emily Strayer. The band was formed in Texas in 1989 as The Dixie Chicks. In 2020, the band dropped the word “Dixie” from its name, owing to its distasteful historical connections with slave-owning states in the southern US.Army of Three … Honorable Ladies
The Chicks attained fame in 1998. A few years later, in 2003, they gained notoriety for announcing to a live audience in the UK that they did not support the invasion of Iraq, and for adding that they were “ashamed” of the fact that they shared their home state with US President George W Bush. As a result of their honorable stance, they were denounced, excoriated, and blacklisted. But they stood by their principles, and to this day, have retained their honor. They still make great music, and remain one of the most successful country-music bands. They have won numerous awards, both in the US and internationally. Hey hey I’m an army of one
Oh I’m an army of one
March March to my own drum
March March to my own drum
Hey hey I’m an army of one
Oh I’m an army of one Brenda’s packin’ heat cuz she don’t like Mondays
Underpaid teacher policing the hallways
Print yourself a weapon and take it to the gun range
Ah cut the shit
You ain’t goin’ to the gun range Standing with Emma and our sons and daughters
Watchin’ our youth have to solve our problems
I’ll follow them so who’s comin’ with me
Half of you love me
Half already hate me March March to my own drum
March March to my own drum
Hey hey I’m an army of one
Oh I’m an army of one
March March to my own drum
March March to my own drum
Hey hey I’m an army of one
Oh I’m an army of one Tell the ol’ boys in the white bread lobby
What they can and can’t do with their bodies
Temperatures risin’ cities are sinkin’
Ah cut the shit
You know your city is sinkin’
Lies are truth and truth is fiction
Everybody’s talkin’
Who’s gonna listen
What the hell happened in Helsinki March March to my own drum
March March to my own drum
Hey hey I’m an army of one
Oh I’m an army of one
March March to my own drum
March March to my own drum
Hey hey I’m an army of one
Oh I’m an army of one
