Lyrics Do Not Matter As Much As The Feels

in #music8 years ago (edited)

Always on the lookout for good music, even ballads, I recently came across 苏运莹(Su Yun Ying). My spidey-senses tingled when I heard her intense and unique voice while it was being played in the background of a poker session.

I immediately asked my friends if they knew anything about the song that was playing, flailing around with my faux Chinese.

Here's the thing - I don't understand Mandarin at all, but I guess music just works that way, tapping into something more primal in us that goes more than mere interpretation of words. One remark about these singing contests - it's pretty amazing knowing that someone's life can change overnight just by singing their hearts out!

If you're one who can enjoy music in foreign languages, then you might be in for a treat. If anyone knows the lyrics, please tell me what she's actually singing about lol.

Speaking of loving music even without knowing a single word (if it's lyrical), here's an album that I always listen to all the time, so much that I can even sing out all the Japanese bits lol. Awesome album. Great grooves and basslines.

If you're in for a great mix of Japanese neo-funk / soul / jazz / acid, here's one for you:-

And lastly, here's the song that bagged me a runner-up position in a Japanese singing competition back in university! Honestly, I still don't understand more than 10 words of the language!

Chage and Aska one sure brings back some memories for me too though I don't understand Japanese.

Plenty of japanese songs in the 90s/early 2000s are pretty memorable!

Especially also like many converted Cantonese and Mandarin.

I see, was that what's playing on TV back then?

No sure about TV but on radio, yes.
