The Tikbalang Project

Targeting an audience of Middle School Students in Canada, The Tikbalang Project will take the form of a one-act (55 minutes), multimedia, interactive, theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance.

After each performance, there will be a 15-minute cast/audience question/answer period focusing on themes of mental health, literacy, leadership, multiculturalism, cultural heritage, stewardship and coping strategies associated with the realities of contemporary student Life.

Additionally, the The Tikbalang and Me musical will culminate in a fifteen song digital download album with a graphic novel. Future plans for an animated film adaptation are also under consideration.

The Tikbalang is a creature from Philippine folklore that tends to lead travelers astray. For the purpose of this project, "The Tikbalang" becomes a central metaphor for the impulse (in all of us) to avoid problems and to escape from reality...
