the HIP-HOP years

in #music7 years ago

The South Bronx of New York is the home of rap or regular hip-hop. Hip-hop started in 1973 at a birthday party of one DJ called Kool Herc. In the South Bronx was a lot of criminality, drugs and violence, ‘ghetto life’, which disco did not represent at all. Hip-hop then was created against the class, glitter and costumes of disco. They created their own party.

They used two turntables; this was music without interruption taken from the disco techniques. This created a continuity in music in the clubs. The base of hip-hop then became playing the instrumental breaks without vocals so people could dance on the break beats (which later created the term breakdancing). They also took some elements of Jamaican music; the Jamaican soundsystems. This is a collection of mobile devices needed for Dj’ing and MC’ing (meaning Master of Ceremonies). The MC’s role was toasting; which is dubbing over a song. Toasting eventually became rap.

But why did hip-hip become a genre of protest? First of all because of its cultural historical association, second the music is textual fitted for protest lyrics and third because of the technological developments of using samples; which is affordable. This characterizes the Do It Yourself aesthetic of the genre. There is an online technology for distribution, especially at places where hip-hop is banned by governments. The only thing that changed is the environment of hip-hop at parties which shifted to the digital environment of the bedroom.

Why do they sample if they can create new content themselves? First of all because of the money and time, but even if those aspects do not matter artists will sample, why? Because people will recognize it; it will be played on the radio; the older music won’t be forgotten and because of musical reasons.
