Music Jukebox #9 – Guitar Heroes

Most people when asked about guitar heroes think names like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Malmsteen, but I beg to differ. My guitar heroes speak to my heart with their music not to my brain with their technique.

So, here’s my guitar heroes.

I was fortunate enough to see Paco De Lucia live, along with Al Di Meola and John McLauphlin. More than 20 years have passed but I still remember it. I was stunned by the way he played and his music.

Funny fact this is one of the first songs I have ever “downloaded” from the internet.

Jim Matheos is a Greek American guitarist and the leading figure of Fates Warning, one of my favorite bands. He has released two solo albums, which are difficult to find physical copies, but on the age of internet you can find almost anything on YouTube.

First album is called “First Impressions” (1993) is accompanied by a violin and cello. It’s fourty minutes of beautiful music. Just close your eyes and enjoy the journey.

Second album is more technical but equally emotional. It’s called “Away with Words” (1999). Yes, Jim likes to play with words the same way he likes to play with quitar.

Another Jim that plays guitar. Jim Hall is a jazz guitarist, with an illustrious career. He released many albums and recorded many classics. This is “Autumn Leaves” played with bassist Ron Carter. Simplicity at its best and yet stunningly beautiful.

Last but not least one more classic. Recorded live in Toronto at 1975 Mr. Hall plays this Jazz classic in his gentle, mellow style. You can’t do any better than that.
