Purchase of after-market pick-ups .

Steemians friends, welcome back! Let's start a further chapter about the customization of the guitar and we do it by going back for a moment to the subject of pick-ups for our guitar.
As we have seen HERE, pick-ups are fundamental elements for the sound of our guitar. There are countless types and models on the market, with various sonorities between them and replacing them with the originals, perhaps with a slightly flat sound, they can give a better tone to our guitar.

But let's look at some information that allows us to have at least some basic notions about these mysterious magnets that transform vibrations into sound.

The factors that most influence the tone of the pickups are the strength of the magnets and the build quality of the coils.
Generally the stronger the magnet, the more intense and accentuated the sound and the high frequencies will be.
Over time the magnets tend to weaken but not all guitarists believe this is an inconvenience, indeed!
The demand for a vintage pick-up sound is so vast that some manufacturers, such as the Seymour Duncan, artificially age the magnets of their pick-ups.
Other houses such as the Alembic, use ceramic or piezo magnets, cheaper, durable and with a higher output volume.

Below, combination of two Humbucker and one Single Coil pick-ups.

The pick-up coils differ from each other in the diameter of the wires used and in the number of turns of the winding.
Both of these factors obviously influence the passage of current inside the coil, thus determining the impedance of the pick-up. One thinks that a thin wire has less resistance than one with a larger diameter, but for Ohm's Law it is not so, it is exactly the opposite since the resistance is proportional to the length but inversely proportional to the section of a conductor.

A high number of turns instead gives the coil itself a greater impedance therefore greater volume, but unfortunately leads to a decay of the brightness of the sound due to a lower response on the high-pitched sounds.

We can find the specifications of the pick-up that interests us on the manufacturer's website. Depending on the type of coil resistance and the type of magnet used, the manufacturer provides us with a graphic to understand the optimal range of operation of that particular pick-up, so if it responds better to high, medium or low frequencies. It is called a resonance peak.

Amici Steemians, ben ritrovati! Iniziamo un ulteriore capitolo riguardo la customizzazione della chitara e lo facciamo tornando per un attimo al discorso dei pick-ups per la nostra chitarra.
Come abbiamo visto QUI, i pick-ups sono elementi fondamentali per il suono della nostra chitarra. In commercio ne esistono di innumerevoli tipi e modelli, con sonorità varie tra loro e sostituendoli agli originali, magari dal suono un po' piatto, possono dare un timbro migliore alla nostra chitarra.
In QUESTO articolo, spiego come sostituirli col fai-da-te.

Ma andiamo a vedere alcune informazioni che ci permettono di avere almeno delle nozioni di base su questi misteriosi magneti che trasformano le vibrazioni in suono.

I fattori che influiscono maggiormente il timbro dei pick.ups sono la forza dei magneti e la qualità costruttiva delle bobine.
Generalmente più il magnete è forte, più intensi e accentuati saranno il suono e le alte frequenze.
I magneti nel corso del tempo tendono ad indebolirsi ma non tutti i chitarristi ritengono questo fenomeno un inconveniente, anzi!
E' talmente vasta la richiesta di un suono da pick-up vintage che alcune case produttrici, ad esempio la Seymour Duncan, invecchiano artificialmente i magneti dei loro pick-ups.
Altre case come ad esempio la Alembic, utilizzano magneti ceramici o piezo, più economici, duraturi e con un più alto volume d'uscita.

Nella foto sotto, una combinazione di due pick-ups Humbucker ed un Single Coil centrale.

Le bobine dei pick-ups differiscono tra loro per il diametro dei fili utilizzati e per il numero di spire dell'avvolgimento.
Entrambi questi fattori ovviamente influiscono sul passaggio della corrente all'interno della bobina determinando così l'impedenza del pick-up. Vien da pensare che un filo sottile abbia meno resistenza di uno con maggior diametro,ma per la Legge di Ohm non è così, è esattamente l'opposto dato che la resistenza è proporzionale alla lunghezza ma inversamente proporzionale alla sezione di un conduttore.

Un elevato numero di spire invece dà alla bobina stessa una maggiore impedenza quindi maggior volume, ma comporta ahimè un decadimento della brillantezza del suono a causa di una minore risposta sui suoni acuti.

Possiamo trovare le specifiche del pick-up che ci interessa sul sito del produttore. In base al tipo di resistenza della bobina ed al tipo di magnete utilizzato, il produttore ci mette a disposizione un grafico per capire il range ottimale di funzionamento di quel particolare pick-up, quindi se risponde meglio sulle alte, medie o basse frequenze. E' chiamato picco di risonanza.

Bene amici, ora che abbiamo le idee più chiare, possiamo districarci meglio nella scelta dei pick-ups after market da montare sulla nostra chitarra. A voi la scelta di un suono forte e squillante oppure un suono pastoso e caldo; o entrambi, perchè no? Ciauzzzzzz!
