5 TIPS ON HOW TO WRITE MEANINGFUL SONG LYRICS
Sometimes even when you listen to some kind of music done in a different language from yours, it may look familiar because music itself is one of the language that is understood by everybody.
Different people have different ways of writing song, but I would love to share 5 ways I write mine.
- What exactly do I want to talk about?
For example, do I want to talk about love, God, Money, heart break, the government?
These questions give me a head way to what I really want to say in the song - In what genre do I want it/what genre fits it more?
Now that I know what I want to talk about, the next thing is: what genre of music do I want to do? If I’m witting about love, what mode do I want my audience to be when listening to the song? All these I put in consideration when writing song lyrics. - Research
This is very important in song writing. Reflecting back to the first tips above, what exactly do I know about what I’m writing? It could be love, God, heartbreak atc. How well do I know these? If I’ve never been in love, the depth of my lyrics writing could be shallow compare to someone who has been or is in love.
If it’s about God, how much of God do I know? The deeper the knowledge of God, the deeper the song lyrics
If I have never been in love nor experienced heart break and I want to write about love or heart break, all I need to do is GO INTO THE CHARACTER. That is, I will have to picture myself in the shoe of a lover in other to understand the depth of the feelings and for great creative song writing.
Make research; know more about what you want to talk about. - Who are my target audience?
This is also very important as it gives me direction on the type of audience I’m expecting.
Is it for the general population? If yes, what kinds of songs are in this category? You may want to take a look at HEAL THE WORLD by MJ
SHOW LOVE by Hadi https://itunes.apple.com/ng/album/show-love-feat-makara-single/1375046880 and many others.
Are my target audience youth? Are they women? Single guys? People in love? Religious group? All these, I put them into consideration.
Lastly, what is my end point in writing this song? What am I looking out for? If I’m writing a worship song, at the end, I’m expecting my audience to get closer to God in Deep worship. If I’m writing about love, I’m expecting people to fall in love. If I’m writing about a heartbreak, its either I’m warming my audience about something bad or consoling someone going through heartbreak etc
These are the Things I mostly consider when writing a music lyrics. I hope it help someone out there
