Grapthar's Song of the Day: Girls At Our Best! 'Heaven'
Girls At Our Best! - Heaven
Girls At Our Best! was a British
punk/post-punk/new-wave band, formed in 1979 in Leeds by founding members Jody Evans (vocals), James Alan (guitar), Chris Oldroyd (drums), and Gerard Swift (bass). They only had a single studio album, although they had a number of singles that actually did pretty well on the UK indie charts. I feel like this a band that has been sort of ignored in America, which is unfortunate, they have a really interesting, original sound, blending pop and rock ideas with a sort of "punk" sensibility.
Listen to Heaven by Girls At Our Best! here.
I discovered this song,
which originally appeared on their only studio album, Pleasure (1981), from a skate video by Welcome Skateboards and really loved it. While the chord progression is relatively simple, there are some parts where they change out the minor tonic chord for a major, sort of hinting at a parallel major modulation, before returning to the minor, which is super easy to do, but creates a really effective and powerful sound.
Enjoy today's song! Thanks for checking out my blog, and Steem On!
