Grapthar's Song of the Day: Sevish 'Gleam'
Sevish - Gleam
Sevish is a recent discovery
for me, having learned about him from YouTuber Adam Neely (who's videos I have shared here before). In a video about microtonal music, Neely recommended checking this guy out, as he incorporates microtonal elements into an electronic music framework, which is pretty amazing in my opinion. Sevish is from London, and has released 3 or 4 albums I believe. I have only delved into this one, Harmony Hacker, from 2017, and so far it's been a great experience, especially considering my own recent attempts at using 22 tone microtonal harmony.
Listen to Gleam by Sevish here.
Sevish shares these songs himself
on YouTube, AND includes a nice little description of the tune:
Gleam has a fast quintuplet groove and uses 22-tone equal temperament as its tuning. I love how a familiar pop or rnb chord progression can become very wonky when played in a tuning like 22.
The odd meter and the even odder harmonies are really cool here, there is something very familiar about it at times, and then it will suddenly veer off into a crazy direction rhythmically and harmony. I have been trying to get my ears accustomed to hearing microtonal harmony, and actually being able to utilize it effectively, so this kind of stuff is GREAT for practicing listening (sounds crazy, but because I never grew up with 22 tones, hearing them as unique intervals requires serious practice)
I hope you like the tune! If you do, definitely give the rest of his albums a listen, they are all available on his bandcamp.

That was really interesting. For a little bit, it sounded like an 8-bit song. Something reminiscent of Super Mario. Then it got a little funk with the key changes and reminded me of those music games where you are riding on a track and trying to avoid hitting things lol. I enjoyed this!
Yeah, the microtone stuff has that sort of out-of-tune midi kind of feeling for sure, definitely kind of Super Mario-y. Glad you were into it, i was stoked when i discovered this album.
