GRAPTHAR'S SONG OF THE DAY: BUDDY HOLLY "BLUE DAYS, BLACK NIGHTS"
Buddy Holly - Blue Days, Black Nights
Buddy Holly is a rock
legend, and although he died very young, his influence is still felt by guitarists now. He was an incredible singer and songwriter, and his style of guitar and vocals became THE standard for rock bands who followed. His band, The Crickets, was known for their unique production choices, adding a natural reverb to vocals and drums by recording in a bathroom, or playing around with the tubes on their amps to get interesting distorted tones. They also wrote incredibly catchy, great songs, thus cementing their place amongst the greats.
Listen to Blue Days, Black Nights by Buddy Holly here.
This song is my favorite
of Holly's. I remember the first time I heard it, I loved the simple lead, just playing ascending and descending major and minor 3rds, and the interesting way Buddy Holly sang really blew me away. There's something just so classic about this song, it's a little more country western than some of his later stuff, but I like that, it shows how and when he was influenced by the music around him. His later songs are worth checking out if you like this, they became much more unique, utilizing orchestras and brass sections, sometimes not even playing guitar.
Hope you enjoy the song! Definitely check out more of Holly's stuff if you have never gotten into him before, you won't be sorry! Thanks for supporting my blog!
