but a few years ago (actually, more like 8 now, haha), my friend Mike came over to my house with a portable hard drive (I think 500 GB at the MOST, which was a huge deal. It was also a giant brick, of course, lol) and gave me a TON of new music; this was my introduction to bands that I now consider favorites like Tera Melos and Russian Circles. Amongst that group of artists was Jeff Buckley, a singer/songwriter who I had somehow missed out on. Buckley was the son of Tim Buckley, himself a singer-songwriter, and began to amass a local fanbase in New York City playing sets of cover songs at various coffee shops and bars throughout the city. Eventually, he began to write and perform his own original music, which resulted in a record deal with Columbia, where he would release Grace, the only full length released while he was alive. Unfortunately, Buckley passed away in 1997 at age 30 after apparently drowning while going for a swim in a harbor off the Mississippi River in Mephis, TN. Before his death, he and his band had been in the studio, working on a new album, though it remained unfinished as Buckley reportedly wasn't happy with results. The year after his death, what was recorded from this album was released, along with a number of B-sides, demos, and unreleased songs, under the title Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk, which is where today's song comes from. I'm not really sure how to classify this song; it's clearly a Jeff Buckley tune, his style is there, but the guitar is really unique, and honestly could fit in a post-hardcore or emo song.
