What is the darkwave?

The darkwave (or dark wave) is a musical genre derived from post-punk and synth pop, is characterized by the use of synthesizers to create dark environments. It is usually related to the Gothic subculture and the new wave.

History

In 1977, the boom that brought the arrival of punk rock to the United Kingdom ended, the interest of the followers disappeared and punk was going out of style, therefore, begins the popularly called "death of punk" (hence the expressions " punk's dead "that was used a lot at the time as sponsorship), in an attempt to revive punk, from its ashes arises the post-punk movement, which brings a more modern sound (for the time) and more mature and worked lyrics , this was what gave rise to the new wave, EBM and industrial. With time the post-punk was taking a darker route than the previous genres, with bands like Soiuxsie and the banshees, with its mystery and its black dress (tribute to the punk group Crass), Joy Division and its depressive environment or The cure with its strangely dark lyrics and crazy hairstyles.
In 1979, the Bauhaus band that is their single Bela Lugosi's dead gives an even darker sound to post-punk, fusing it with David Bowie's glam rock and adding a peculiar mixture of strong lyrics with absurd humor, that is, gothic rock , the peculiar use of the word "Gothic" in reality, is a translation error of the English word "goth" that represents vulgarism, ugly, rustic or tasteless things, Peter Murphy, the vocalist, when asking the band as They would catalog their style, responded "goth rock", jokingly as a "self-insult" to their music for being ugly and in bad taste.
Later in 1981, Clan of Xymox experimented with these sounds taken from Bauhaus giving it more "danceable" sounds and a dismal atmosphere with the use of the synthesizer and extra instruments that go from the drum machine to the violin. With the arrival of the darkwave, the so-called "darkwavers" are born, which would become a subdivision of the Gothic subculture dedicated exclusively to this music

The darkwave as a subculture

The darkwave is a musical subculture tied to the Gothic subculture, to clarify that a darkwaver only wants to sit quietly to listen to their music, to be darkwaver you simply have to listen and enjoy the darkwave, other things are optional, like the dress.
Gothic

Darkwavers tend to share tastes for dark things, there is no ideology, the darkwaver subculture lacks it, just a taste. that something is dark does not mean that there is something behind (I say this to avoid novices in the genre turned into spooky kids [that means poser.])
