2017 Metal Album Review - "No Grave But the Sea" by Alestorm
The year 2008 was taken by storm.... by ALE-storm, more specifically....

With their debut album "Captain Morgan's Revenge", they introduced a new era in the evolution of this very little-known metal subgenre known as "folk metal". Sure, there were some pirate-influenced rock and metal bands in the '80's, but Alestorm was arguably the first to revolutionize the movement by throwing their hats into the folk metal ring. Instead of songs about drinking and partying in praise for certain Pagan gods and goddesses, or rewriting native tales and songs from their ancestors of old, Alestorm chose to create songs about drinking and partying, yes, but in praise of the mere sake of what it's like to be a pirate! A free-spirited, impossible to control or contain soul vanquishing foes from other islands and sailing the seas with no particular endgame except for treasure and wenches and mead! Oh, and let us not forget that RUM!
Very few bands of their time, additionally, could reach the level of originality and creativity that they did, and still currently do, sit upon in the pantheon of metal subcategories. This album is just yet another form of proof that Alestorm can still think of things to play and sing about, and that one cannot limit themselves to beating the dead horse in regards to a specific theme. Though these many songs sound different in instrumental and lyrical nature, the theme has always been the same.... "It f**king RULES to be a pirate!!!!"
And now, with their most recent release, "No Grave But the Sea", they have reconfirmed that which they already knew.... "Sometimes it can pay to scrape the barrel once more", when speaking of lyrical ideas.
And now, for your enjoyment, I have selected four tracks from their new release, so that you may see them for the entertaining and creative rum-infused minds that they are! And if ye don't find them to your liking, please feel free to walk yeself off the plank and drown to Davey Jones' locker, you wanker!!!!
"No Grave But the Sea"
"Bar und Imbiss"
"F**ked With An Anchor"
"Rage of the Pentahook"
