Track review: twenty øne piløts "Jumpsuit"

in #music6 years ago

The famous duo from Columbus, Ohio, that has built a humongous and crazy devoted fanbase over the years has come back with a new single "Jumpsuit". They absolutely blew up in 2015 with world-shaking hits like "Stressed Out", "Ride" and 2016's "Heathens". The fans have been hungry and like wild, rabid dogs out for new tøp material. And here it is, the lords of meaningful, depressing lyrics are back with more music, spreading mental health issue awareness.

The song starts off with a thick bass line that just cuts through and is accompanied by Josh Dun's drums. A little while later, Tyler Joseph joins in with tender vocals. "Spirits in my room, friend or foe?/ Felt it in my youth, feel it when I'm old/ Jumpsuit, jumpsuit, cover me" the singer cries for help, explaining that he hasn't gotten rid of the ghosts that haunt him all his life and uses "jumpsuit" as a metaphor for protection, mental help. While this metaphor might not be as clever as it seems, and he's clearly not wearing a jumpsuit in the music video, it's still quite interesting and descriptive. In the last chorus it explodes with the last screams of Tyler Joseph in need of help as soon as possible.

Overall, the lead single of their upcoming album "Trench" is quite an interesting one, with clear resemblances to "Heavydirtysoul", a fan-favorite off of their album "Blurryface", since it has similar instrumental decisions and their structures are really alike. It has deep, meaningful lyrics, with the questionable usage of "jumpsuit" as a metaphor and sonically it's edgy and vibrant.
