How I almost never discovered my favorite band (Electropunk, Crystal Castles)
A few years ago I heard a song on the radio. It was one of those songs that gets played over and over again so many times you eventually get sick of it. I never really did like this song to begin with...but I liked some of the sounds in the background. This lead me to use my app Shazam to discover the band name and song title. This was the song below.
"Crystal Castles, that's an interesting name", I thought to myself. And that's as much thought as I gave it. I never went home and looked up their other music (because I mostly didn't like that song). I pretty much forgot about them after that and was sick enough of hearing that same song on the radio, I stopped listening to that station.
Fast forward 2 years. >>>>>>>
Two years later, I'm cleaning out my dresser and find my old iPhone 4. I suddenly remember using the Shazam app hundreds of times on that phone, and never really getting around to check out all the music I scanned with it. I charge it up and start going through the Shazam. I come across Crystal Castles and think "That was that song I didn't like except for the background sounds". So I open up my laptop and search Crystal Castles on Youtube.
What I heard next took me somewhere I've never been...
Crystal Castles is now one of my favorite bands. I have been listening to them consistently since discovering them. Every time I listen, I think of how I almost never discovered them. I have never heard their music anywhere other than that one song on the radio. I guess you could call it their "radio friendly" song. I've noticed this with a lot of music these days. The Weeknd is another artist who I believe started making radio friendly songs to get more attention. It worked, but I can't help but notice his radio songs are not at all like all his other music (which is much better and original, IMO). I'm just glad I did the search.
