Selling cardboard for a living, my first post about running my on-line store

in #mtg7 years ago (edited)

It has been about 4 years since i left my regular 9 to 5 job. I had been there almost 6 years but i got tired of doing the same thing day in and day out and feeling used by the corporate bosses. As much as i enjoyed what i did designing solar systems for installers around the country and sometimes around the world due to my Spanish speaking, it was wearing on me that even due to my high performance that i had no where to advance to.
I finally got a chance to make a break February 2013 and as scary as it was leaving a job paying me almost 6 figures a year in a rather poor state like New Mexico, my happiness was worth more as it would ultimately impact my son, the only thing i have that i care about in this world. I sometimes wonder if i should have just dealt with the crap but ultimately i feel it was the right thing to do.
I piddled around for a few months trying to figure out what to do but part of the time i was beginning to learn how to sell on-line and discovered that one of my favorite hobbies, Magic The Gathering, had some rather valuable cards people were willing to buy. Before i knew it, i was looking to see what cards i had that i could sell to help support my self and trading for good inventory.
Since then, i have learn a lot and finally i feel like i know what i am doing in terms of acquiring low cost stock and minimizing my costs. It still blows my mind that people are willing to pay hundreds for some of the cards i have but it thought me that money can be made in many ways once you are willing to take a chance.
I have thought about owning an actual brick and mortar store as it has benefits buying from distributors but being on-line has it freedoms. There are somethings that i still need to do to better my store but hopefully i can learn from people on here what i am missing.
I included a link below to one of my on-line stores on a website called TCGplayer.com. Either way, i love the fact that not only can i enjoy this hobby but pay a mortgage and car off of cardboard.

Takes courage to pursue your true interests and passions than merely settling for a pay cheque in a soul sucking occupation. Kudos to you. Amazing that you can earn income on a hobby you likely played as a teenager(?).
