[Movies] Stephen King's The Tommyknockers Coming To The Big Screen
Universal Pictures have come out of a three-way bidding war victorious, leaving Sony and Netflix down for the count. The prize: the movie rights to Stephen King's The Tommyknockers. There's no writer or director yet, or any news on an expected release date but James Wan is attached as a producer. Surely for fans of Stephen King, this is ssome pretty exciting news. There's been no shortage of adaptations of King's works lately, with IT, 1922 and Mr Mercedes all getting the treatment, and I'm excited to see this less talked about piece getting the same attention.
The Tommyknockers is a 1987 horror/sci-fi novel by King, that centres around the residents of the Maine town of Haven gradually fall under the influence of a mysterious object buried in the woods. This was the first "adult" book I read one summer in France when I was 12, so it's always been firmly in my consciousness. There was a 1993 TV adaptation, although as with many King adaptations of the period, it wasn't very well received. I personally absolutely love all of the TV/movie adaptations of King's, even the infamous Maximum Overdrive. I'm a big fan of "bad" movies.
If you enjoy Stephen King's works, you might enjoy another horror author called James Herbert. He's probably my greatest horror icon, who sadly passed away in 2013. He first came to prominence with his first book, The Rats. His biggest fling with hollywood was with the movie adaptation of his book, Fluke. Needless to say, the movie was a lot more PG than the book.

I am a King fan but more of his non-horror works such as Running Man and The Stand although those have horror elements I just categorize them differently in my head. I've been meaning to check out Dark Tower and it's been on my to read list for a while. I do like some of the horror stories such as Christine, Pet Sematary (and the Ramones song), Firestarter and Carrie. I'm like you I like "bad" movies too although I can't really think of any of his I would say were bad.
I didn't even realise the running man was a king one! Makes so much sense, and I do love The Stand.
Dark Tower has been on my reading list too, I'd read most of his "classic" works but I stopped before getting to the newer stuff. There's also a sequel to The Shining, which I didn't know until recently and really want to read, I think it's called Dr Sleep.
Maximum Overdrive is a pretty bad movie, it's the only one King demanded to be involved with and well... let's just say I think a lot of cocaine was involved behind the scenes. I think bad is probably the wrong word actually, but some the his movie adaptations turned out less than you'd have hoped I think. I know he wasn't a fan of Kubrick's The Shining, but it's one of my favourites. There's a few cheesey-ish ones like The Langoliers, The Night Flier and Sleepwalkers oh and there's Dreamcatcher which I actually really really enjoyed, it was far better than I'd expected.
The fact that most of his stories are interwoven was something I only learnt recently, with the Dark Tower connecting them all. Maybe I should go back to the start and read everything from start to finish.
