Poetic Television Review: Where No Man Has Gone Before (Star Trek, S1X01, 1966)

In the depths of space, a legacy born,
From tumultuous beginnings, Star Trek would sworn,
A pilot rejected, yet from the ashes rose,
A series that would change the face of television's pose.

The Cage, a start, though not the one that made,
The cut, but later repurposed, its story displayed,
In The Menagerie, a two-part tale so fine,
A testament to perseverance, a dream divine.

Where No Man Has Gone Before, a second chance took hold,
A new pilot born, with stories yet untold,
Exposition and cerebral content did abound,
A risk taken by NBC, with audiences unbound.

In 2265 AD, the USS Enterprise did stride,
Recovering secrets of the SS Valiant's demise with pride,
ESP phenomena and energy fields so bright,
Damaged the ship and crew in a most dreadful night.

Garry Mitchell and Dr. Dehner survived the test,
With powers awakened that would put them to unrest.
God-like abilities consumed Mitchell's soul so fast
Spock argued for his end while Kirk devised a plan to last.

Delta Vega waited as Mitchell's fate was sealed so tight
As Spock and Kirk debated through day and endless night.
This episode flawed yet still holds up today so bold
Disregard for continuity but performances shine like gold

Shatner's Kirk led with heart and logic in tow
Nimoy's Spock logic guided as emotions ebbed low
Montgomery Scott and Sulu joined this noble crew
Their bond forged stronger than any challenge anew

Gary Lockwood shone as Mitchell lost to his might
Sally Kellerman broke molds as Dr. Dehner shone so bright.
Despite technical limitations this episode stands tall
Its themes explored moral quandaries through it all

Where No Man Has Gone Before remains timeless in our sight
Action blended philosophy leaves viewers pondering through day and night
An iconic cast born here forever etched in time
Star Trek legacy continued from this most humble prime.
