Poetic Television Review: Mudd's Women (Star Trek, S1X03, 1966)
In the early days of a show's design,
A period of trial, with errors that shine,
The creators experiment, seeking the perfect tone,
A balance of entertainment, and a story to be known.
Star Trek: The Original Series, a classic in its own right,
Had its share of growing pains, in the dark of night,
Mudd's Women, an episode that stands apart,
A fascinating yet flawed instalment, that captures the heart.
With roots in Western TV shows, and influences so bright,
The episode's tone and style, take on a different light,
The plot unfolds like a chase, through the asteroid belt so fine,
With Mudd and his women, as cargo so divine.
Eve, Ruth, and Magda, beautiful and fair,
Volunteers for marriage, with hearts full of care,
But Mudd's intentions are shady, with a "Venus drug" in play,
A mysterious allure that may fade away.
The episode's blend of camp and science fiction so bold,
Is at odds with Star Trek's progressive tale to be told,
Women as commodities, traditional roles so unkind,
A portrayal that infuriates feminists of mind.
Despite its problematic elements, the episode still shines bright,
A product of its time, with entertainment in sight,
Roger C. Carmel's performance as Mudd so charming and grand,
Endures to this day, in the Star Trek universe so planned.
Mudd's character reappears in Season 2 with flair ,
And decades later homage is paid with care ,
In Star Trek: Discovery , Rainn Wilson takes on the role ,
A testament to Mudd's impact , forever to unfold.
