Poetic Film Review: Z (1969)

In streets of old, where shadows play,
A tale of blood and power's sway,
A politician fell, a martyr's cry,
Echoes of a distant, troubled sky.

In Thessaloniki's streets, a club did strike,
Grigoris Lambrakis, a life to unmake,
A deliberate act, with police in tow,
A cover-up born, as truth did go.

The film Z tells this story anew,
A roman à clef, with facts shining through,
Costa-Gavras's lens, a dramatic eye,
Exposing the regime, as justice did die.

The Deputy, a symbol of hope and peace,
Cut down by hatred, in a violent release,
The Investigating Magistrate's quest for truth,
Unravels the threads of a sinister youth.

The villains emerge, with ideology and gold,
Their actions driven by power to hold,
The General's tirades against freedom's call,
Miniskirts and rock music, an enemy to all.

Z marks a turning point in Gavras's art,
A left-wing voice that echoes in the heart,
Of those who fought for justice and what is right,
Against oppression's darkness and endless night.

This film stands tall as testament to courage bold
Inspiring filmmakers like Oliver Stone to unfold
Tales of truth and power that still resonate today.
