Poetic Film Review: March on Rome (La marcia su Roma, 1962)

In twilight's hush, where shadows play,
A nation's tale of Fascism's sway,
Italy's story, complex, dark, and grand,
A dance with darkness, at the hands of a master plan.

A comedy of errors, of ideals and might,
March on Rome, a film of wit and blight,
Dino Risi's lens, a critique so fine,
A balance of humor and gravity's shrine.

Benito Mussolini, a name that strikes fear,
A leader born, of chaos and of spear,
The Blackshirts marched, with fervent zeal,
Their path of violence, a nation's reveal.

Rochetti, a veteran, lost and alone,
A con artist, with a heart of stone,
He finds solace, in the Fascist creed,
A promise of reform, a radical need.

But as he joins, the movement's sway,
He sees the darkness, in a new way,
The pragmatism, of power's corrupting stain,
A betrayal of ideals, a nation's pain.

Gavazza, his friend, a brother true,
A journey through the Fascist crew,
From protests to prisons, to the streets' hard test,
A path of violence, that would not rest.

The film's tone, a balancing act, so fine,
Comedy and tragedy, a delicate design,
A critique of power, of ideologies cold,
A commentary on humanity, so bold.

But as the years pass, and the audience's view,
Changes with time, the film's meaning anew,
A generation lost, in troubled history's haze,
The film's impact, in a different daze.

Yet still it stands, a flawed but brave attempt,
To address the darkness, with a comedic bent,
A film of wit, of humor and of might,
A commentary on Italy's Fascist night.
