Poetic Film Review: How the West Was Won (1962)
In days of old, when silver screens shone bright,
A Western epic rose, a spectacle in sight.
How the West Was Won, a title bold and grand,
A tale of adventure, love, and a bygone land.
With Cinerama's sweep, the camera soared,
A widescreen dream, where heroes roamed and more.
But technical flaws marred the epic's might,
Distorted scenes, a jarring, arthouse sight.
Spencer Tracy's voice, a guiding light,
Led us through decades, in the dark of night.
Five episodes told, of Prescott's quest,
From Erie Canal's waters, to the Wild West's crest.
James Stewart and Debbie Reynolds, stars of old,
Their performances, a testament to tales untold.
Karl Malden, Gregory Peck, and Eli Wallach too,
Each brought their character, to life anew.
The railroad's roar, the Civil War's toll,
The outlaws' revenge, a story to be told.
A sweeping narrative, a grand design,
But sometimes, the epic feels, too much to define.
It's a relic of a bygone era, a reminder of the past,
A testament to Hollywood's golden age, that will forever last.
Nonetheless, it stands, as a curiosity rare,
A Western epic, that few would dare to compare.
With Alfred Newman's score, and John Wayne's guest,
The film's grandeur shines, in its musical crest.
A commercial success, with an Academy Award's might,
But some critics argue, it's an overambitious sight.
So here it stands, a Western classic of old,
A curiosity, a relic, worth beholding to behold.
For cinephiles and fans, it's a treasure to see,
A sweeping epic, that will forever be.
