Poetic Film Review: Hannibal (Annibale, 1959)
In ancient lands, a tale is told
Of Hannibal, brave and bold
A general of Carthage, with a heart of fire
Seeking revenge, his greatest desire
He crossed the Alps, with elephants by his side
A feat of strength, in the winter's tide
He fought for glory, for his nation's pride
But Rome stood strong, with legions to abide
The film that tells his story, a epic of old
A sword-and-sandal tale, with heroes to behold
But alas, it falters, like Hannibal's own quest
A romantic subplot, that fails to find its best
The chemistry between leads, a lacking spark
The battles chaotic, with no strategic mark
The conclusion disappointing, with loose ends untied
A historical epic, that fails to satisfy
The visuals stunning, in the opening scene
The Alps a backdrop, for Hannibal's grand dream
But as the film progresses, it loses its way
A curiosity, rather than a serious historical say
The cast and crew, with talents so fine
Failed to deliver, a film that's truly divine
Gabriele Ferzetti, shines as Fabius Maximus wise
But even his performance, cannot save the film's demise
Terence Hill and Bud Spencer, a duo of old
Make appearances, but their scenes are few to behold
The film's potential, lost in the sands of time
A disappointment, that fails to leave its mark in rhyme
So let this be a lesson, to filmmakers of old
To stay true to history, and not to grow cold
For a film that's faithful, to the facts and the tale
Is one that will stand, the test of time and prevail.
