Poetic Film Review: Annapolis (2006)

In the realm of film, a gamble is often played,
With promising premises that falter, then decay.
Annapolis, a military drama of 2006,
Once sought to ride the wave of patriotism's flow.

Directed by Justin Lin, produced by Disney's hand,
The film intended to capitalize on the land,
Of post-9/11 fervor and reverence for the military's might,
But arrived when public sentiment had shifted from the light.

Jake Huard, played by Franco, a young man of ambition,
Dreams of the Naval Academy, a prestigious mission,
But struggles academically, and in relationship's fray,
Embattled with Cole, his senior, in a contentious way.

Ali, a high-ranking midshipman, brings solace to his plight,
As boxing talent could offer Jake a chance at Brigades' light,
But formulaic script and clichéd dialogue prevail,
Predictability and lack of originality, the film's downfall to unveil.

Comparisons to An Officer and a Gentleman, and Rocky too,
Only highlight the film's lack of depth, and how it fails to shine through,
James Franco and Tyrese Gibson, with uninspired performances,
Cannot salvage the sinking ship, of Annapolis, a forgotten venture.

In the end, a wasted opportunity, a film best left unseen,
A forgettable relic of Hollywood's past, a tale of unfulfilled dreams.
