Black Panther, Black History Month - Someone's Review.
The Black Panther Movie, Black History Month , Black cultural awareness and Black Nationalism
"I was in Jacksonville, Florida last week to attend a Pharmacotherapy Clinical Conference. During dinner , I could not help overhearing the conversation about a new movie called ‘ Black Panther’ . The movie is critically acclaimed and made up of an entirely black cast and a black director . Black Panther is the number one movie in the world according to box office estimates and every day the movie is breaking all kinds of records in the movie industry.
What is so special about this movie? Apparently, during the Hollywood special screening , Oprah Winfrey and Denzel Washington and other major stars could be seen in tears.
To briefly encapsulate the phenomenon of this movie, you have to understand the history of Black Cinema in America and the misrepresentation and dark portrayals of black Americans and black Africans and also the negative stereotypes about Africa and African culture.
In the early days of cinema in America, blacks were fitted into predictable stereotypes in films and on television. The black man was always the negative and ugly character and the character that was always the butt of jokes.
This movie is historic and transformational because, for the first time , an adventure movie empowers the black characters as superheroes and also embraced African culture and traditions .
The movie is transcendental and futuristic by its portrayal of the history of Black culture and civilization .
The black superheroes are intellectually superior and are proud of their civilization.
The nation of ‘ Wakanda’ that is represented by the movie is technologically advanced with modern skyscrapers and fast moving trains and an advanced military.
What is beautiful about the movie is the way the tapestry of the black experience through history is woven to educate the viewers about the achievements of black culture and civilization . A lot of achievements that traditional media and social media fail to portray .
I was determined to capture the essence of the movies when I arrived in Philadelphia and I decided to watch the movie with my daughters. Trying to get a ticket was not easy as most movie theaters were already sold out and we had to settle for a late showing.
Most Africans and a great deal of African-Americans were dressed in African attire and everyone came to celebrate this achievement in cinema.
We were not disappointed. The movie gives you pride about our black history and African culture and also our collective aspirations about our continent . The movie also highlights our potential contributions, our economic possibilities and technological capabilities".
Definitely going to see this movie.
