Star Wars - How The Last Jedi Could Have Been Better (Spoilers)

in #movie7 years ago (edited)

I went into The Last Jedi with so much excitement and thrill. I walked out 13 trailers and 2:20 of movie later with a weird feeling in my stomach. I was still hungry and I had not been fed. What the hell just happened?

No, in my opinion it is not a terrible movie. But it is a not a great Star Wars movie. Using Luke correctly would have saved it.

In The Force Awakens, we get a tease of Luke at then end. It was certainly a holy sh*t moment for us fans. Then I waited two long years to watch the events unfold. Luke is upset. He doesn't want to train Rey (which we understand why later). He basically kind of whines a lot. Then we finally get an EPIC battle at the end. YES! This is what we have been waiting for! Then we find out it was just a holographic projection from Luke. He never left the island. And then he dies and joins the The Force.

Wait? WTF?

No, you cannot do that to us. We waited all this time to see a bad-ass Luke and he never materialized.

JJ setup a very nice story that should have been continued but it was not. It was almost like Rian Johnson was making it up as he went. Now I know why Mark Hammil had issues with the script. I assume he knew we would not be happy.

Luke should have brought the X-Wing up from the water and joined his comrades. Yes, he can still die...but let's do it in a way that brings honor to the character. Yeah, I know. He did give his life for his friends because projecting himself like that killed him. But come on. This was probably my biggest disappointment of the film. We can talk about other inconsistencies like trying to drop bombs in weightless space. Or how Rey is somehow an expert pilot. Mary Poppins Leia. We can go on and on. But the Luke thing is what bothers me the most.

On a side note. Why did we not get a Lando appearance? I kept thinking he was going to be the one who answered the Rebellions call for help. Then I thought he would be the code breaker. Nope. With the Han Solo movie quickly approaching, it would have been nice to bring the character back for a quick cameo. But no, that would make Star Wars fans happy.

I understand why so many people enjoyed the movie. As stated earlier, it was not a bad movie. It was just a bad Star Wars movie.

Sort:

Frustrating that everything was setup to be a fabulous movie, but then just torn to shreds by the director. Disney has to be worried about Han Solo. At least they have JJ back for the last part of the trilogy. I have a feeling Rian Johnson will not be around for the next trilogy!

Yeah, I went it to this movie with high expectations...
I constantly had the feeling, that the movie didn't know where to go...

One thing.
Why did they have to go to that planet to find af code breaker/master, when it all didn't even matter at the end... It was like they only made that part to come up with some statement about how our world is also just run by rich people that sells weapons... its a good point but with no relevans to the Star Wars franchise.
