Ivan's film review - Us

Welcome dear friends to my long overdue review of the new horror movie by Jordan Peele, "Us".

SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't seen the movie, read no further. I usually don't post spoilers, but I really want to discuss this movie thoroughly, simply because it's a masterpiece. If you had seen "Get out" by Peele, you already know he makes his horror movies in a rather specific and twisted way. So let's break it down and discuss the movie aspect by aspect.

Acting

If I could, I would give the leading actors a standing ovation, especially to Lupita Nyong'o for her absolutely outstanding performance. I'll dare to say it was almost flawless. From being a badass mother in charge of protecting her family, to playing her shadow, a creepy evil version of herself, she delivered. I'm no actor, but it can't be easy getting so much into character, particularly for the evil clone. Some of the movement, facial expressions and voices Lupita gave to her character were outstanding to say the least. Let’s not forget the child actors Evan Alex and Shahadi Wright Joseph who are only 11 and 13 years old and already look extremely spooky on screen. They sure a have a bright future in the horror movie industry.

Costume/Makeup

Although the costumes didn’t require much work since all the evil clones were deliberately dressed the same, the makeup on the other hand is a piece of art. It was bound to look awesome to be honest, after all they had a team of over 10 people in that sector. And not only did they do their jobs perfectly, you could say they even put in some extra. The way they managed to make two characters for each actor look somewhat similar but still visibly different is just amazing. The makeup definitely gave the creepiness an extra push in this film.

Plot

Now let’s talk about the most important part, the story. I really have to compliment the crew that was in charge for releasing the trailer for this one. Honestly, I’m sick of seeing trailers that give you all the information about the movie while also using all of the best parts to promote it. They build up your expectations and you are bound to end up bored as a mole in a flower pot. That being said, I absolutely loved the trailer for “Us”. It sparks up your interests carefully and very lightly and then the movie proceeds to amaze you.
A girl who suffered a childhood trauma is now all grown up with a husband and two children and the family is headed to their vacation home, a place where the trauma from years ago still lurks. What scarred the little girl was seeing her evil counterpart in a hall of mirrors. A real little girl that looks just the same as her, but with a much more wicked temperament. Ever since the day of the encounter our main character has a feeling that her evil self will come to haunt her again. But what she didn’t expect was the entire family of twisted clones to be there. This is where the events spiral out of control and the Wilson family has to play their cards right in order to survive the night. And just when they think they got away a new surprise waits around the corner. It isn’t just their family who is being attacked and it seems that everyone in America is experiencing the same tragedy. A whole army of wicked clones are emerging from the tunnels in the deep underground to kill their counterparts and replace them.

To sum it all up I absolutely adored the movie. The slow building of psychological fear is really something in this one. If you get scared easily you’ll probably end up sitting in your home being freaked out by your reflection in the mirror. Hope you liked the review and that you’ll decided to give the movie a chance!
